My Art Classes At
Southland Education

My studio may be my favourite place to create in, but I really enjoy my time

tutoring Art classes at the Southland Education building in

Invercargill (formerly the Strang's Coffee building!)

The WEA (Workers’ Educational Association) has also been set up in this building

since 1915, and is the longest-established provider of adult education in New Zealand.

Southland Education is a non-profit incorporated society, which is a member of the Federation of WEAs in Aotearoa New Zealand.
My favorite classroom (the Greenroom) has the best view of the original Strang's coffee mill out the back (Est 1872).

I've developed an obsession with finding Strang's vintage coffee and spice tins and adding them to my artworks (Strang's & Southland Critters By Carmen Owen)
Did you know this is where instant coffee was invented!?

So many people don't realize it happened in little old Invercargill N.Z and patented in 1890!

Teens Art classes

My teens ' art class are held at The Southland Education Building on Wednesdays from 4pm - 5:30 pm during NZ school terms.

Ive been teaching Teens (age 12 - 17 years) for the last couple of years.

There is a real lack of art classes for this age bracket in Invercargill.

Most of my students are the same talented kids who have been attending my classes since I started teaching!

In our first class I usually start off with explaining materials and how to layer the pastels by demonstrating some smaller, quick pastel sketches (such as animal eyes and fruit). We then discuss what subjects and mediums that the students are interested in painting in the future. The following class students are encouraged to bring a reference photo that they wish to create a piece of work from.

New students are most welcome to join, and all materials are provided.

Enrolment details can be found here... Invercargill Courses - Southland Education

Some quick demonstrations I created to show the students how easy it is to make realistic underpaintings of animal eyes and fruit in a few minutes.

The next step would be to blend and add small detailing.

Some wonderful works in progress by my talented Teens class!
